Oilers Game Notes 79.0: Edmonton hosts last-place San Jose Sharks

After a thrilling 5-4 shootout win over the Florida Panthers on Wednesday, the Edmonton Oilers are back in action at home tonight, facing off against the San Jose Sharks, who currently sit at the bottom of the league with a 17-25-7 record. The Oilers will be looking to continue their recent success and secure two crucial points to climb the standings.

As usual, moneyline odds aren’t giving the Oilers much credit, with some sportsbooks currently installing Edmonton as just -150 odds on favorite. However, with the Sharks coming off a 5-1 defeat to the Canucks on Tuesday, the Oilers should be confident they can secure another strong result.

Here’s what you need to know ahead of tonight’s matchup, as the Oilers look to put together another streak and get back into the playoff picture.

Sharks’ Struggles

Despite some notable victories throughout the season, the San Jose Sharks have struggled consistently and are currently on a 10-game losing streak, having last secured a win on January 25 against the Winnipeg Jets. Since then, they’ve been thoroughly outclassed, with no signs of momentum changes despite some close games.

Their most recent match, against the Vancouver Canucks, saw the Sharks take an early lead but ultimately gave up five unanswered goals. The Sharks are clearly struggling to defend, having given up 158 goals this season, third most in the league. Their -81 goal differential is also the worst in the NHL.

Edmonton, meanwhile, has seemingly found its footing, especially offensively. Over their last ten games, the Oilers have won seven, losing only to some of the league’s toughest opponents in the Tampa Bay Lightning, New York Rangers, and Florida Panthers.

Oilers’ Offensive Explosion

What has been most impressive about the Oilers of late is their improved offensive production. During their seven-game win streak, Edmonton scored at least four goals in each game, showcasing their full offensive potential. Even in their most recent match, where they squandered a three-goal lead, they still found the back of the net four times.

The emergence of rookie forward Dylan Holloway has been a significant boost, as he now looks comfortable at the NHL level, with three points in his last five games. The top line of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins continues to dominate, having scored five goals and 12 points in the last five games.

The Oilers’ defense will need to tighten up tonight, as they can’t always rely on their high-powered offense. While San Jose’s netminder James Reimer has not been confirmed for tonight’s match, he is a proven veteran who can steal games. Edmonton can’t afford to take periods off tonight against a struggling Sharks team, or they may find themselves on the wrong side of a comeback.

Prediction

The Oilers are a more talented team, have the advantage of playing at home, and are desperate to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Sharks, meanwhile, are struggling mightily and have lost ten in a row. However, as the Oilers know all too well, those dark clouds can be blown away by a sudden shift in momentum.

While the Sharks may surprise the Oilers and break their losing streak, Edmonton’s offensive prowess and recent form suggest they should still be the favorites tonight. If the Oilers can continue their offensive output from their previous games and tighten up their defense, they should be able to take this one.

PREDICTION: Edmonton Oilers 5-3 San Jose Sharks
