In a recent interview, the showrunners talked about the upcoming finale and how Shauna’s relationships with other characters will evolve. According to Lyle and Nickerson, Shauna’s friendship with Natalie is also going to be explored, as well as her complex relationship with her mother. The latter, in particular, leaves the door open for some interesting developments.

“Shauna’s entire story on the show is her coming to terms with what her mother is and isn’t,” says Lyle. “And what she ultimately learns is that her mother is a human being, and human beings are complicated. They’re not perfect, and they make mistakes. And that’s okay. But it’s a hard lesson for Shauna to learn, especially with her mom.”

As for Melissa’s impact on Shauna’s arc, the showrunners are pretty tight-lipped. However, they did confirm that Shauna’s relationship with Melissa will be “a profound catalyst” for her development in season 3.

“Anything we can say about that is just going to be a huge spoiler,” says Nickerson. “But yes, that relationship and that trauma for Shauna, it’s going to be a profound catalyst for her arc this season.”

While this doesn’t give much away, it does confirm that Shauna’s storyline in the finale will be hugely influenced by her relationship with Melissa. And hopefully, we’ll get some answers to the countless fan theories about whether or not Melissa will be alive in the present day.
