Airfreight shipments at Stuttgart airport can now be loaded and unloaded using electric trucks, which are charged using charging stations provided by Mercedes-Benz.

The Mercedes-Benz plant in nearby Sindelfingen delivered three eEconic electric trucks to Stuttgart airport, which will use the vehicles to transport airfreight between the cargo terminal and aircraft parking positions.

The vehicles will be charged using three charging stations installed at the airport by Mercedes-Benz Trucks. Two of them are high-power charging stations that can charge up to six vehicles simultaneously. The third is a quick-charging station for passengers and other airport traffic.

“With the electric trucks and the charging stations at the airport, we are taking a further step toward climate-neutral cargo handling and flexible, needs-based solutions for our customers,” said Alexander Wehr, head of logistics development at Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH.

“The electric trucks are also significantly quieter than comparable diesel trucks, so they offer another benefit in an airport environment subject to strict noise abatement conditions.”

Stuttgart airport says it is the first airport in Germany to use electric trucks for airfreight handling.
