Der klassische Jack Nicholson-Film, der Roger Ebert missantropisch: “Es ist ein depressives Erlebnis”
One of the most influential film critics of all time, Roger Ebert, had an undeniable love for the movies. However, there was one particular film he couldn’t stand, despite its critical and commercial success, and its star actor who he usually admired very much. That film was About Schmidt, released in 2002 and starring Jack Nicholson.
“I admired Nicholson’s performance in About Schmidt, but I hated the movie. I thought it was a depressing experience, reminiscent of Death Becomes Her, in which a jaundiced view of life triumphs over every last shred of optimism. I know that moods and viewpoints vary, and that what I found depressing you may have found uplifting, or at least thought-provoking. But I urge you to consider the possibility that movies can make you miserable, and that sometimes it’s okay to walk out of a theater in a sour mood, having been kicked around by a film that grabs you by the collar and shakes you. I don’t want every movie to be an easy experience, and I’ll risk a few kicks to the head now and then in exchange for the privilege of being challenged.”
Did you ever watch About Schmidt? Did you share Roger Ebert’s sentiments about the film? Or did you enjoy it?
