2026 Volvo ES90 Packs up to 670 HP and Keeps the Sedan Form Alive
The Volvo ES90 is an interesting take on the sedan/liftback formula. With the demise of the venerable S90 sedan, the ES90 takes its place but with a slightly more practical liftback design that will appeal to those who thought the S90 was a bit too conventional. Expected to debut in 2026, the ES90 will offer a choice of various hybrid powertrains with up to 670 horsepower.
Volvo recently confirmed that the ES90 will be offered exclusively with some sort of hybrid powertrain. Specifically, the range will span from a mild hybrid configuration to a hybrid-assisted plug-in hybrid all the way to a twin-motor hybrid system good for a combined 670 horsepower. That last variant is interesting, as it employs a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine similar to the one found in the XC90 SUV, but with a modified intake manifold and combustion process for higher torque output. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, it should provide decent acceleration and overall fun driving dynamics.
The ES90’s interior is where it matters most. Here, Volvo has made significant improvements to the S90’s cabin with a simplified dashboard design and a larger tablet-like touchscreen infotainment system. Expect the same treatment as the V90 station wagon, with a fully digital instrument cluster, ergonomic seating, and plenty of storage space in the door pockets and center console. While the rear seat may not be as spacious as some of its competitors, it should at least offer a comfortable amount of legroom and headroom. And since it’s a Volvo, safety features such as autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control will be standard.

The ES90’s liftback design should give it a more practical edge over the S90. Similar in size to the V90, it features a rear end that slopes towards the bumper, allowing for easier access to the cargo area and making it more versatile than a traditional sedan. While the ES90 will share its platform with the recently announced Polestar 3 electric SUV, both models will retain their own distinct styling and features.
If Volvo’s plan for the ES90 materializes, we’re in for a treat. With sleek styling, a practical liftback design, and potent hybrid powertrains, it has the potential to be a exciting contender in the midsize luxury segment.
