“‘A Complete Unknown’ star Monica Barbaro had dreams about Joan Baez until she called her on the phone”
She had never met the folk legend, but Baez made quite an impression on A Complete Unknown subject Monica Barbaro. The Chicago actress, who’s appearing in the doc about Baez’s influence, got to meet her hero — and even sing with her — when the film premiered at Sundance.
“I had been dreaming about Joan Baez since I was a little girl,” says Barbaro, whose German ancestors immigrated to the US in the late 1800s. “My dad would sing her songs to me when I was in the crib. So when I got off the phone with her for the first time, I ran around my house screaming ‘I just talked to Joan Baez, I just talked to Joan Baez!’
“She’s a legend, but she’s just so kind and so generous. She’s really done so much for me, without even knowing me. It’s been a really beautiful relationship.
